Coach - Summer employment opportunity with the East Hants Stingrays Swim Association  

The East Hants Stingrays Swim Association (Stingrays) is a not-for-profit located in Elmsdale, Nova Scotia.  The summer swim team is expected to have between 45 and 65 children ranging in age from 6 to 18 years old at various skill levels.  

The Stingrays are seeking a keen, dedicated, and supportive coach to lead assistant coaches and our summer swim program from June to late August. Based on a 35-hour week, flexible hours outside of the set 4pm-7pm practice Monday through Friday. Weekend hours are expected for invitational and provincial meetsThe start date must be agreed on, with part-time hours in June. The Government of Canada funded this job through the Canada Summer Jobs program. You must be aged between 15 and 30 and be legally entitled to work in Canada. 

Hourly rate $19.00  

Primary Responsibilities:  

  • Create a plan for the swim season that includes training schedules and competitive racing opportunities 

  • Design, implement and lead Stingrays competitive and pre-competitive programming  

  • Organize and facilitate practice and pool schedules, clinics, invitational time trials, away meets, team pool party & recognition night  

  • Track and maintain time trials and meet details per swimmer 

  • Participate as the coach at club events such as fundraisers, swim-a-thon, time trials, etc. 

  • Attend swim meet competitions with Stingrays swimmers 

  • Assist with club registration and ensure affiliation requirements are met 

  • Represent the club provincially, interacting with Swim Nova Scotia and Swim Canada to maximize opportunities for athletes and coaches on provincial/national teams and training camps, and building relationships to position the club as a provincial leader  

  • Manage and lead assistant coaching staff – including managing the coaching budget, guiding assistant coaches with their group plans, scheduling coaches, conducting regular meetings, working with the assistant coaches on their personal development plans and mentoring upcoming coaches  

  • Act as the technical director responsible for ensuring all coaches stay current with the latest technologies, tools, and techniques for both in water and dry land training  

  • Ensure that all assistant coaches meet the Swim Nova Scotia Coach Membership Requirements (posted on the Swim NS website) and are fully registered with Swim NS/CSCA/Swimming Canada 

  • Engage and mentor senior swimmers interested in assistant coaching 

  • Communicate openly and clearly with the Board of Directors; swimmers and parents; and club administrative and Executive coach. Communications may include providing a monthly “Coach’s Report”, monthly Coaches meetings, scheduling and attending parent information meetings, scheduling face to face meetings as required with swimmers and parents, and written communications as required regarding expectations, schedules, meets, etc. 

  • Assist the club in recruiting, assessing, and retaining swimmers, as well as helping grow and promote the club  

  • Recruit volunteers to help at events, order team clothing, launch and promote fundraising (Sport Nova Scotia SportSweep, Sport Split 50/50) 

  • Contribute to the Stingrays social media presence and help build the Stingrays' brand!  

Qualifications:  

  • Previous swim team experience is necessary and coaching experience is ideal

  • Proof of completion of CAC Safe Sport Module OR Respect in Sport Activity Leader Training
